For Freshmen

Welcome to LMU!

Dear Freshmen,
welcome to LMU and to the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. On this website you will find some initial information to get you started. The freshmen letter ("Ersti-Brief") will likely arrive at the beginning of October and provide you with further useful information.

Videos for Future Freshmen

We have filmed two videos for you to give you a first impression of our campus - you can find them here. Additionally, Prof. Daumann conducted an interview with some students containing tips and tricks for a successful start to your studies.

Deadlines

Exercises & Lab Courses

In principle, you need to register for all exercise classes and lab courses; however, in the first semester, this will be done automatically for you. Registrations always open towards the end of the current semester.

Semester Fees

The semester fees for the upcoming semester must always be transferred by the end of the current semester at the latest, though you can also transfer them anytime throughout the semester. Instructions can be found in the online self-service functions.

After transferring the semester fees, you must revalidate your LMU Card every semester. The validation machines are located in the Leipelt Foyer.

Exams

You must register for all exams in advance. Registration usually opens about one month before the end of the lecture period and takes place via LSF for most exams.

For some exams, you need to register via other websites (e.g. the CuP exam registration website), which will always be specified along with the exam dates.

If you miss the registration deadline, you can often still send an email to the instructors. Exam deregistration is possible up to two working days before the exam.

Official Freshmen Welcome

LMU Welcome Event

On the first day of the semester, LMU hosts a welcome event for first-year students at the main building (Geschwister-Scholl-Platz). There you will get to know the campus a bit.

Welcome Event on Campus

A welcome event also takes place shortly before the start of the semester at the Chemistry and Pharmacy Campus. There you will receive important information regarding lab courses, exams, lectures, and exercises. Details about the dates and room for the welcome event can be found in your freshmen letter.

Our Freshmen Events

Student Council Welcome

As part of the welcome event on the Großhadern campus, we as the student council will also introduce ourselves. You will learn what we do and what our tasks are. We will also inform you about our services.

Campus Tour and Rally

Following our presentation, we will guide you across the campus in smaller groups so you can get your bearings. You are welcome to ask us any questions about your studies. After the tour, there will be a campus rally organized by us, sending you on an exciting detective case across campus.

Beer and Pretzels

As a reward for solving the case, we sponsor beer and pretzels. This serves as a opportunity to connect with your fellow students and with student council members from higher semesters.

Freshmen Trip ("Ersti-Fahrt")

Since it can be difficult to meet new people at the start of and during the semester, we organize a freshmen trip where several student council members and you go away for one of the first weekends of the semester to get to know each other. You will receive the location, dates, price, and registration details with your freshmen letter.

Freshmen Meeting

To give first-year students a better insight into our work, we host a dedicated freshmen meeting. This takes place during the first few weeks of the winter semester. You will receive the exact date during the welcome event. However, you are also welcome to attend any other meeting if you are unable to make it on that day.

Freshmen Party

Unikult organizes 2 parties per year at the main campus. One of them is LMU's Freshmen Party. You can read more about it on the Events page.

Important Links

Other important links include the lecture period dates, where you can find how long the lecture period lasts each semester. For registering for exams, lab courses, and exercises, the Registration Page and LSF are essential. For further information regarding your degree program, the CUP Website is important. There you can find exam dates, schedules, and module structures.

The First Semesters

Unlike other degree programs, the Bachelor's in Chemistry and Biochemistry follows a strict schedule. In the first 4 semesters, you do not select any elective modules at all; instead, all modules are predefined. The schedule follows a pattern where lectures are held in the morning, followed by lab courses and exercises in the afternoon. Unlike some other universities, LMU hosts lab courses alongside lectures during the semester rather than during the semester break. Lab courses strictly require mandatory attendance throughout your studies.

Further information about the degree program can be found in our freshmen magazine "Nur-Mut"; see download above
