Semesters 5 and 6

Orientation Studies

In the orientation studies stage, you can decide (almost) freely which lectures you want to attend and thus which combinations you would like to take. However, there are a few rules that must be followed.

General Information:

  • Information event by Dr. Thomas Engel in the summer semester (late June) → exact date in LSF under Bachelor Events → Events without ECTS

  • Structure of the 5th and 6th semesters consisting of two elective modules and one extension module (P12 module), each worth 15 ECTS

Elective Modules

  • Choice of 5 elective modules: Inorganic Chemistry (AC), Organic Chemistry (OC), Physical/Theoretical Chemistry (PC/TC), Biochemistry (BC), Biology

  • 2 of these must be taken

  • Do not need to be registered in advance; simply attend lectures and register for exams accordingly → details below

  • An elective module consists of a lab course with a seminar (together 9 ECTS) and two lectures (together 6 ECTS) → three lectures are offered per subject, but only two need to be taken

  • Information in timetables and in LSF → timetables may not always be up to date

  • Exam dates can be found in LSF

Inorganic Chemistry

Lectures

  • AC 4: Inorganic Molecular Chemistry, Dr. Leitz, Winter Semester

  • AC 5: Solid State Chemistry, Dr. Kloß & Prof. Johrendt, Winter Semester

  • AC 6: Bioinorganic Chemistry, Prof. Cutsail, Summer Semester

Lab Course

  • AC3 Lab Course: 

  • Three to four weeks (depending on public holidays) at the end of the semester break

  • Registration on the CuP page, info on Dr. Krumm's homepage → first come, first served

 

Organic Chemistry

Lectures

  • OC 3: Bioorganic Chemistry, Prof. Carell, Winter Semester

  • OC 4: Organometallic Chemistry and Stereoselective Reactions, Dr. Berthold, Summer Semester

  • OC 5: Theoretical Concepts of Organic Chemistry, Prof. Ofial, Summer Semester

Lab Course

  • OC2 Literature Practical Course:

  • Either in the Winter Semester or Summer Semester, schedule flexible (to be arranged with assistants in assigned research groups), pay attention to grade deadlines!!

  • Presentation in the seminar on a scientific paper (from various OC research groups, choice on a first come, first served basis)

 

Physical/Theoretical Chemistry

General Information

  • Only ONE elective module can be taken from this field → either Physical Chemistry (PC) or Theoretical Chemistry (TC)

  • However, all lectures can be taken for both elective subjects (2 lectures + the lab course for your chosen specialization)

  • Attention! The Bachelor thesis can only be completed in the subfield in which the lab course was completed (PC or TC)

  • TC 3 and TC 4 can also be taken/counted as modules in the Master's in Chemistry

  • PC 3: Statistical Thermodynamics, Prof. Lamb, Winter Semester

  • PC 4: Biophysical Chemistry, Prof. Lamb, Summer Semester, ENGLISH

  • PC 5: Modern Developments in Physical Chemistry, All PC & TC Professors, Winter Semester → exam performance is a presentation on a current paper

 

  • TC 3: Quantum Chemistry 1, Prof. Ochsenfeld and Prof. Fingerhut, Winter Semester

  • TC 4: Quantum Chemistry 2, Prof. Ochsenfeld, Summer Semester

  • For both lectures, there is an (optional) exercise class (strongly recommended), which grants an additional 3 ECTS → credited to the P12 module

Lab Courses

  • PC 2 Lab Course: 6 weeks before Christmas in the Winter Semester, two days per week (1 day lab + 1 day seminar + reports) or one day per week lab + seminar as a block course in December

  • TC 1 Lab Course (Computational Chemistry): every semester, during the entire lecture period two afternoons per week (Thu + Fri 3–5 PM) plus weekly homework assignments (grade is determined solely by these)

 

Biochemistry

Lectures

  • BC 4: Cellular Biochemistry, various lecturers from BC, MPI, and Helmholtz Center, Winter Semester, 6 ECTS

  • Molecular Genetics, Prof. Förstemann, PD Dr. Schäffner, Summer Semester

  • Literature and Methods Seminar in Biochemistry, Dr. Beatrix, Prof. Beckmann, Prof. Förstemann, Summer Semester, Attention: mandatory LSF registration, registration period ends before the semester begins! → Grade counts toward the lab course grade

  • In addition: Seminar "Methods in Biochemistry 2", Various BC lecturers, Winter Semester

Lab Courses

  • BC 2 Lab Course: 3 weeks in the Winter Semester, February/March (no longer overlaps with the AC 3 lab course) → Retaking exams from earlier semesters during the lab course is discouraged/not tolerated by course management

  • Lab course can also be taken externally → subject to approval by Dr. Beatrix

 

Biology

Lectures:

  • Fundamentals of Cell Biology, Profs. Leonhardt, Leister, Mokranjac, Osman, Nägele; Location: alternating between CuP Campus and BMC

  • Fundamentals of Molecular Biology, Prof. Enard, Dr. Brachmann; Location: BMC

!!! Both lectures are examined as a module exam and must be passed to attend the lab course

Subject-Specific Extension (P12 Module)

  • 15 ECTS (almost) freely available

  • Ungraded ECTS possible depending on the subject → average of the remaining grades counts for all 15 ECTS

  • Can be filled with remaining lectures from elective modules that have not yet been credited there

  • Topics: Basic concepts, climatology, elementary dynamics

Atomic and Molecular Physics for Bachelor + Exercise

  • Concepts and experimental methods of atomic and molecular physics: Planck's radiation law, Bohr-Sommerfeld quantum mechanics, H-atom, multi-electron atoms, atoms in external fields, spectroscopy, X-rays, molecular physics. The lecture is accompanied by demonstration experiments.

Theoretical Physics 4: Statistical Physics (Compact)

  • Winter Semester, lecture twice a week, 6 ECTS, Prof. Ruhlands

  • Description: Introduction to the concepts and theoretical methods of statistical physics: fundamentals of statistical physics, statistical and phenomenological thermodynamics, laws of thermodynamics, applications (e.g., thermodynamic cycles, phase equilibria).

Business Planning (Successor to "Starting Up - From Ideas to Successful Business")

English for Biochemists

  • Winter Semester, 3 ECTS, ungraded

 

Exam Registration

  • Exams can be registered either under the corresponding elective module or under the P12 module → along with lab courses, this determines your chosen elective modules

  • Exam grades can easily be reassigned to different modules retroactively → appointment at the Examination Office
